History
Morrison & Smith, LLP has a long and outstanding reputation in the accounting profession. Below is some information about our late founders Claud A. Morrison and William D. Smith.
Mr. Claud A. Morrison established this CPA practice in 1951. After serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII, Mr. Morrison attended the University of Alabama, graduated and moved to Spartenburg, South Carolina where he worked as an accountant and passed his CPA exam, Certificate No. 120. He then moved to Tuscaloosa, AL and had to take the CPA exam again, Certificate No. 223, and began his practice in what is now Morrison and Smith. He served many civic and professional organizations. He served on the first professional development committee with the Alabama Society of Certified Public Accountants resulting in mandatory professional education requirements for CPAs in the State of Alabama. He was appointed by the Tuscaloosa City Council to the then City Park & Recreation Board. He promoted legislation to convert the CityPark and Recreation Board to TuscaloosaCountyPark and Recreation Authority making the City operations a County-wide operation. He was also appointed and served on the City Board of Education for many years. He was presented with the Alabama Society of CPAs 1992 Public Service Award recognizing his professional and personal time given to improving quality of life in a profession and the community. He worked diligently for the CPA profession, his clients and his community until his death in December 1999.
Mr. William D. Smith began his career with Mr. Claud Morrison in 1955 while attending the University of Alabama earning his B.S. in 1956 and his Masters in 1957. After graduation, he became partner and began his life-long career with Morrison & Smith. Mr. Smith served on many civic and professional organizations including: AICPA Council, Political Leadership Cabinet and Executive Council, Chairman of Government Affairs with State Society Subcommittee, President of the AL Society of CPA's in 1999/2000, served on AL Juvenile Justice Council and was appointed to the Alabama Trust Fund by the Governor of Alabama. He dedicated himself to improving the CPA profession and was recognized for his efforts by being awarded the first Lifetime Achievement Award from the Alabama Society of CPA's. He worked diligently for the CPA profession, his clients and his community until his death in March 2005.
Today, Morrison & Smith, LLP is led by G. Alan Hartley, Barrett A. Burns, and R. Daniel Sutter. The three partners bring 75 years of solid accounting, auditing and tax experience to the firm. Like the founding partners, they understand that serving their community with commitment and integrity are keys to success.
